Dunbar Junior
Triathlon 2002
A
total of 34 competitors aged 10 –15 took part in the inaugural Dunbar
Junior Triathlon on Sunday at Dunbar Leisure Pool.
This
new event attracted talented young athletes from as far afield as
Troon, Falkirk and Dunfermline. The younger age group (10-12) swam
150 m, cycled 2km and ran 1.6km. The older group (13-15) swam 250m,
cycled 4km and ran 1.6km.
The
slightly chilly conditions did not dampen the enthusiasm or spirit
of the competitors. Novices and more experienced athletes enjoyed
the challenge of the increasingly popular sport of triathlon. The
event was well supported by family, friends and marshalls. The facilities
at Dunbar Leisure Pool were excellent and the prize giving was very
well attended by all.
The
winner of the Girls 10-12 age group, Kirstin Daly (Troon) edged out
local Dunbar girl, Anna Cathro by one second. Their times of 19:40
and 19:41 both beat the first boy home, Stuart Reilly (Falkirk) who
won the 10-12 age group with a time of 20:42. North Berwick’s Iain
Dove was 3rd (21:16). Jenny Inglis from Dunbar was another
local prize winner was 3rd behind Anna.
Michael
Legget from Gifford won the 13-15 age group boy’s title in 23:10,
a minute ahead of Matthew Day from North Berwick. Craig Dale (Tranent)
had the fastest swim time and finished third (26:09)
Carla
McGlynn (Musselburgh) won the 13-15 girl’s prize in 31:45 and Louise
Murdoch (North Berwick) was second.
The
event ran very smoothly and plans are already underway to make next
year’s event bigger and better.
